Recently I was fortunate to attend a couple of oil painting workshops with Cindy Vincent. These
one day events covered the basics of oil painting, and really helped me feel comfortable with a
medium that I am still experimenting with. I very much believe that there are lots of benefits to
working in a different medium or style to broaden an artists’ skill set and artistic voice.

The first Sunday, we worked from a beautiful sunset photograph taken at Moberly Lake, and this
was a great exercise in blending and colour selection. Each student had a very different
approach, and the variety was great to see. There was a lot of emphasis on creating a sense of
movement in the water, and perspective in the sky. I am now very excited to paint more of the
lovely skies and scenery this summer using some of the skills learned during this class.
On the second Sunday, we took a very different approach to a campfire photo, which was also
taken at Moberly Lake. This was my first painting done entirely with a palette knife, which really
took me out of my comfort zone. I like the impressionistic feeling, and think that I will spend time
to develop my skills in this style of painting.
These classes were held at West Moberly First Nations’ Dunne-Za Lodge. This is a wonderful
facility, and the host, Tamara, could not have done anything more to make everyone feel
welcome. The view across the lake was amazing, and everything was set out perfectly for the
students. The food and refreshments were outstanding, and we even came away with a
souvenir bag of Dunne-Za Lodge goodies.
I would highly recommend any more workshops with Cindy, and anyone looking for a great
getaway spot at Moberly Lake should look into renting a cabin from Tamara
